Psychosocial treatments
In addition to continuing medication, social (psychosocial) and psychological interventions are required once psychosis subsides. These might include:
Individual treatment
Normalising belief patterns may be facilitated by psychotherapy. In addition, understanding how to manage stress and identify early warning signs of relapse may help individuals with schizophrenia manage their illness. (9)
Family counselling
This provides education and assistance to families affected by schizophrenia.
Social abilities instruction
This emphasises enhancing social and communication interactions as well as participation in daily activities.
Employment assistance and vocational rehabilitation
This focuses on assisting individuals with schizophrenia to prepare for, maintain, and locate employment.
Many individuals with schizophrenia require assistance with activities of daily living. Numerous communities provide housing, employment, crisis intervention, and self-help organisations for individuals with schizophrenia. A case manager or any other member of the treatment team may assist in locating resources. With appropriate treatment, many individuals with schizophrenia may be able to manage their illness.
Inpatient hospitalisation
During times of severe symptom crisis, hospitalisation may be necessary to ensure safety, adequate rest, appropriate nutrition, and basic hygiene.
