Environmental variables
Viral infections, increasingly stressful situations, and exposure to contaminants such as marijuana may trigger schizophrenia in individuals with a genetic predisposition for the disorder. Schizophrenia manifests itself occasionally when the body undergoes physical and hormonal changes, such as those that occur in young adulthood and adolescence. The following environmental factors may increase the risk of schizophrenia:
Viral diseases
Trauma during delivery
Psychosocial factors, including traumatic stress
malnutrition during pregnancy
