There is no single answer to the query of what foods neuropathy patients should consume. However, some general guidelines can aid in the selection of foods that promote neurological health. The following nutritious foods have been shown to alleviate peripheral neuropathy symptoms. (9)
The fruits
If you have peripheral neuropathy, incorporating certain fruits into your diet may help alleviate your symptoms. The following products are rich in antioxidants that protect nerve cells from damage:
These tiny berries are loaded with antioxidants, including anthocyanins, which have been shown to enhance nerve function and protect cells from damage.
Cherries – Cherries are yet another fruit rich in antioxidants and anthocyanins. They may reduce inflammation and irritation in peripheral neuropathy patients.
Cranberries – Cranberries are an excellent source of vitamin C, which promotes nerve health. In addition, they contain antioxidants that can prevent cell injury.
Fruits and vegetables
Recent research suggests that consuming vegetables may prevent or treat peripheral neuropathy.
The study investigated the effects of three distinct vegetable varieties on peripheral neuropathy. The first group consumed green foliage vegetables, while the second and third groups consumed yellow and orange vegetables, respectively. The greatest results were obtained by those who consumed green leafy vegetables (broccoli, kale, spinach, asparagus), followed by those who consumed orange vegetables. Those who consumed yellow vegetables saw less improvement.
The researchers hypothesise that this is because green verdant vegetables are rich in neuroprotective antioxidants and other nutrients.
Complete cereals
Some evidence suggests a link between whole grain consumption and reduced peripheral neuropathy symptoms. According to a study published in the journal Nutrients, those who consumed the most whole grains were less likely to develop the disease than those who consumed the least. Those who consumed at least three servings of whole grains per day were 26% less likely to experience discomfort and numbness due to peripheral neuropathy than those who consumed fewer than one serving per day.
Women who consumed at least two servings of whole grains per day were 23% less likely to develop peripheral neuropathy than those who consumed fewer than one serving per day, according to a study published in the journal PLOS ONE. While these studies do not prove that consuming whole grains prevents peripheral neuropathy, they do suggest a possible connection between the two.
Omega-3 abundant diets
Omega-3 fatty acids have a positive effect on neuronal health. They maintain the health of the nerves and protect them from harm. Increasing your intake of omega-3-rich foods is a simple method to improve your nerve health and alleviate the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy.
Salmon, trout, herring, sardines, flaxseeds, chia seeds, walnuts, and avocados are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids in the diet.
