Surgical Treatments
Surgery is an option that can be used to treat some of the symptoms associated with Parkinson’s, but it comes with many risks. Surgery may be a good option for those patients who have symptoms that respond well to levodopa. There are currently two surgical treatments available for Parkinson’s patients. One is a procedure that delivers gel formulations of levodopa, carbidopa, and naltrexone via small intestinal tube. The other treatment is deep brain stimulator (DBS). Healthcare professionals only perform surgery on Parkinson’s patients who have severe motor fluctuations and/or are exhausted by medical treatment of tremors.
