Surgical procedures on the parathyroid gland

Some calcium phosphate stones caused by overactive parathyroid glands require surgery on the parathyroid glands. On each of the four sides of the thyroid gland are parathyroid glands. When the parathyroid glands produce an excessive amount of parathyroid hormone, calcium levels rise and kidney stones begin to form. The physician may also recommend treating the underlying cause of hyperparathyroidism, thereby preventing the formation of kidney stones.
When a benign, small tumour develops in one of the parathyroid glands and produces excessive quantities of parathyroid hormone, hyperparathyroidism can sometimes develop. In addition, other health conditions also result in increased parathyroid hormone secretion. Surgical excision of the tumour from the parathyroid gland prevents the development of kidney stones.
