Itchy skin
The itchy skin can also be a sign of liver disease. It is also known as pruritis. This uncomfortable sensation causes you to itch your skin. Pruritis, which is common among older adults, can be worsened or caused by dry skin. In most cases, the accumulation of body bilirubin is the underlying cause for itchy skin.
It may be bumpy, red, or rough depending on the cause. Constantly scratching the skin can cause rough, thickened areas of skin that are susceptible to infection and bleeding. Itching can affect the entire body in most cases. However, some people experience itching only on certain body parts, such as the arms, legs, backs, stomachs, or faces. The severity of the condition is also indicated by pruritis that develops into red, thick patches.
Occasionally, pruritis can last for a long time and be very intense. It gets worse as you scratch. Itching increases as you scratch. Chronic pruritis that lasts longer than six weeks can have a negative impact on your quality of life. It can lead to insomnia, disturb your sleep-wake pattern and cause anxiety and depression. Untreated constant scratching may cause scarring and skin damage.
