Abdominal Swelling
Inflammation of the liver can occur during the early stages of liver conditions, such as infectious diseases like hepatitis and bacterial infections. The swelling in the abdomen is a sign that your liver may be trying to fight or heal an infection. If the inflammation persists for several weeks or even months, your liver can be permanently damaged.
You may feel a swelling in the affected area, which can be hot and tender. In the early stages, an inflamed organ may not cause any pain or discomfort. The inflammation can disappear if the condition that is causing your liver to be inflamed is treated at an early stage.
As the disease progresses, you may experience a marked swelling in the abdomen. This is an indication of ascites. Ascites is the term used to describe fluid accumulation in the peritoneum, which could be caused by a malfunctioning liver.
