Liver Anatomy
The liver is the largest organ in the body (measured at a normal weight of 1500g) and the second-largest organ after the skin. The liver is located in the upper-right segment of the depression of the stomach. It lies underneath the stomach and sits on top of the right kidney and digestive tract. The liver, which is formed like a cone and weighs about 3 pounds, is a dark ruddy-earthy organ. The liver is shaped like a wedge or crystal, with the base on one side and peak on one side. The liver is a pinkish-earthy color, has a delicate consistency and is deeply vascular. It is also friable. The classification of liver structures is confusing. The International Hepto-Pancreato-Biliary Association (IHPBA) phrasing of liver life structures and resections is trailed by most liver specialists.
