In severe cases, the electrolyte and ion imbalance can disrupt the electrical conduction pathway of the heart by disrupting the normal membrane potential of conducting membranes, resulting in an aberrant ECG. Heart murmurs and fibrillation can also be traced back to the ionic signalling pathway initiated in the large intestine by the toxic degradation products of lactose.
