clogged pores
Sebum contributes to the body’s defense mechanism by functioning as a barrier against microbial attack. Sebum produced by sebaceous glands travels through the hair follicle and above the epidermis. Additionally, sebum transports dead skin cells and microorganisms into the hair follicle. These dead skin cells, bacteria, and sebum can become a viscous substance that clogs the orifice of the hair follicle if excessive sebum secretion is caused by an imbalance in hormones.
