Abnormally strong sexual desire
Bipolar disorder also impacts a person’s sexual activity and sexuality. During the manic phase of bipolar disorder, a patient may experience hypersexuality, which is characterized by an increase in sexual activity. It may increase the risk that a person with bipolar disorder will engage in behavior that may have negative consequences. A person with an unusually high sexual desire may engage in unprotected sexual activity and contract a sexually transmitted disease (STD). In a significant number of patients with bipolar disorder, hypersexuality is one of the most frequent symptoms. There is an increase in sexual aggression, the desire for forbidden sex, and the need for sexual gratification.
