Calcium channel blockers are typically used to treat excessive blood pressure and heart problems, but they also have mood stabilizing effects in patients with bipolar disorder. Calcium channel blockers have fewer adverse effects compared to conventional mood stabilizers. Those who cannot tolerate anticonvulsants or lithium may choose calcium channel blockers instead.
