Although antidepressant medications have traditionally been used to treat depressive episodes associated with bipolar disorder, their use is becoming much more controversial. The researchers highlight the effectiveness and safety of antidepressant drugs. However, antidepressants must be used with caution. Growing evidence indicates that antidepressants are ineffective for bipolar depression. According to a study by the National Institute of Mental Health, the combination of antidepressants and mood stabilizers is not always effective because it may induce psychotic symptoms in some patients. While some experts believe that prolonged use of antidepressants can increase the frequency of depressive episodes and cause mood instability in some patients, others disagree.
