Growing evidence indicates that antidepressants are ineffective for bipolar depression. According to a study by the National Institute of Mental Health, the combination of antidepressants and mood stabilizers is not always effective because it may induce psychotic symptoms in some patients. While some experts believe that prolonged use of antidepressants can increase the frequency of depressive episodes and cause mood instability in some patients, others disagree.
