Less slumber requirement
Sleep disturbances are a core symptom of bipolar disorder in the majority of individuals and are common among those with bipolar disorder. According to the American Psychiatric Association, bipolar disorder patients have a reduced need for sleep and tend to remain conscious for several days. The manic phase is characterized by elevated levels of energy and excitement, which reduce the desire to slumber. On the other hand, a depressive episode is characterized by recurring thoughts of suicide and other negative aspects of life, which tend to disrupt sleep. Insomnia is also prevalent among those with bipolar disorder.
