Surgical and Additional Procedures
Your doctor may recommend additional treatment options based on the presence of complications, the severity of your symptoms, and the underlying cause of your HUS.
Organ transplant
A kidney transplant is a procedure that replaces a patient’s kidney with one that has been donated by a donor. Kidney transplantation is an operation in which a functional kidney is transferred from a donor to a recipient. Typically, a transplant kidney comes from a recently deceased donor, but kidneys from living donors or deceased donors are also conceivable. A patient suffering from acute renal failure, chronic kidney disease, or an infection may be required to undertake the procedure.
Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is a leading cause of acute renal failure, and kidney transplantation has proven to be the most effective treatment for many patients. The best candidates for a kidney transplant in hemolytic uremic syndrome are typically children who have not yet reached their full growth potential; however, adults with shorter life expectancies due to acute disease episodes such as kidney failure caused by hemolytic-uremic syndrome should also be considered.
