Immunosuppressive pharmaceuticals
Many patients undergoing kidney transplants have their immune systems suppressed to prevent organ rejection. For some, however, this can result in a second issue: hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Although not a common complication for kidney transplant recipients, HUS indicates the destruction of some red blood cells. When this occurs, the kidneys are unable to effectively filter waste products from the circulation.
