Swollen extremities
In patients with hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS), swollen extremities are caused by abnormalities in red blood cells and platelets. The swelling of the patient’s kidneys may lead to a hazardous accumulation of potassium, sodium, and phosphorus. This condition is also known as hyperkalemia, hypernatremia, and hyperphosphatemia. The excess of these chemicals causes the individual’s extremities to swell significantly.
