abdominal enlargement
Abdominal enlargement (abdominal distension) is a frequent symptom of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). This is caused by transient inflammatory spasm of the smooth muscles of the intestines, resulting in increased peristalsis, slowed transit of intestinal contents, and fluid and gas accumulation. This results in pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, as well as the formation of diarrhea with mucous and blood.
Abdominal swelling associated with hemolytic uremic syndrome is frequently referred to as being bloated, blocked or filled, having a swollen abdomen, or having a water belly. In the first day or weeks of HUS, any of these symptoms may occur due to the blockage caused by edema.
