Blunt or Penetrating eye trauma
Cataracts can be caused by any damage to the eyes or surrounding areas. Most of these traumas go unnoticed. The eye can bleed or have the drainage system around the iris blocked by blunt trauma. The cataract that results from blunt trauma may develop immediately or later. During penetrating injury, the lens and cornea may be damaged leading to cataracts and vision loss. 24 % of people have traumatic cataracts. The traumatic cataracts may also be caused by exposure to chemicals and radiations over a long period of time.
