Inherited Abnormality
25 % of all cataracts are caused by genetic abnormalities. Genetic abnormalities like Lowe syndrome or neurofibromatosis 2 type 2 can cause cataract.
Lowe syndrome:
Also known as the oculocerebrorenal (OCR) syndrome. This multisystem disorder affects not only the brain and kidneys, but also the eyes and causes cataract formation in the eye. The majority of children have cataracts both in their eyes.
Neurofibromatosis type 2:
This is a neurological disorder. It can cause cataracts or other eye-related disorders. 80% of those with NF2 will develop juvenile posterior subscapsular catastrophies.
