Funduscopy or Retinal Exam
The doctor will use tropicamide to dilate the pupil. The doctor uses an ophthalmoscope to examine the eye after the pupils have been dilated. The doctor can see the retina, the back of lens and the back of eye with this detailed view. The test is painless and the doctor can easily interpret the results.
The disadvantages of a retinal examination:
- The eye drops that dilate the pupil can cause irritation or increase pressure.
- The light used to illuminate the eyes can sometimes cause eye damage.
