Diagnosis of Cataracts
In order to diagnose cataract, the doctor will perform several tests. The doctor may ask about the family history of cataracts or investigate symptoms.
Test of visual acuity
The doctor will ask the patient to read aloud a chart with letters or images to determine the extent of the damage to their vision caused by a cataract. Each eye is tested separately. The doctor will also ask the patient to read brightly lit letters if a suspected cataract is suspected. Visual acuity tests can be used to assess visual loss. However, in most cases, more precise tests are performed.
