High altitudes increase the risk of cataract. UV rays have short wavelengths, and can therefore penetrate deeper into the lens. When the epithelial cell of the lens is exposed to sunlight, they experience oxidative stress. Radiation causes the protein inside cells to degenerate. This leads to clumping. This clumping and building of proteins can lead to the formation of cataracts.
