Diabetes mellitus
Diabetes is a disease characterized by an inability to convert glucose into energy. In type 1 diabetes, the immune system will begin to attack pancreatic cells that produce insulin. Due to insufficient insulin secretion, the body is unable to convert glucose into energy, resulting in an increase in blood glucose levels. When this occurs, the body begins producing energy from the body’s musculature and fat, resulting in weight loss.
Other consequences of type 1 diabetes may include:
Fatigue, hunger, dehydration, and frequent urination.
