Vitamin C: Food Sources, Why It’s Important, and More

Sweet chilies

Citrus fruits, such as lemon, grapefruit, and oranges, may immediately come to mind when one considers vitamin C-rich foods. Therefore, the bell pepper is an incredible source of vitamin C. Another astounding fact is that the vitamin C content of bell peppers varies depending on their colour.

Depending on the colour, a half-cup (75 grammes) serving of raw bell peppers contains the following quantities of vitamin C:

Yellow bell peppers contain 69 mg of vitamin C, or 76% of the DV (Daily Value).

Green bell peppers contain 60 mg of vitamin C, which is 67% of the daily value

Red bell peppers contain 95 mg of vitamin C, or 106% of the daily value

Note that the above vitamin C content is for raw bell peppers; cooking or heating peppers reduces their vitamin C content marginally. Peppers can also be sliced, chopped, or added to salads, stir-fries, or broiled. You can savour them in a tuna steak with red peppers salsa seasoned with Mexican spices.
