Diabetes in Pregnancy Diagnosis
Gestational diabetes typically develops during the first or second trimester of pregnancy. Your healthcare provider may examine for it between the 24th and 28th week of pregnancy, or earlier if your risk is rising. Your physician may request a glucose tolerance test. You will consume 50 grams of sugar in a sweetened beverage, which will raise your blood sugar levels. After one hour, you will need a blood glucose test to determine how your body is processing all that sugar. If the results indicate that your blood glucose is rising above the normal range, you may be diagnosed with diabetes.
Then, you will need a 3 hour oral glucose test, which entails a blood sugar test 3 hours after consuming the 100 gram saccharine beverage. Your healthcare provider may also test you by having you fast for nearly 12 hours, followed by giving you a 75-gram sugary beverage and a two-hour blood sugar test.
