Underactive Thyroid

Hypothyroidism is another name for an underactive thyroid. The thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones. Patients with rheumatoid-like arthritis can show hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is well known to be associated with muscular diseases. Hyperthyroidism is characterized by trigger finger. Hypothyroidism can cause stiffness in the muscles, swelling, and stiffness. This can lead to synovial thickness, nodules, and ligamentous laxity. These can all contribute to trigger finger. A study found that 10% of patients with hypothyroidism had trigger finger. The study analyzed thyroid status and both trigger finger as well as carpal tunnel syndrome were prevalent among hypothyroid patients.
