Tourette Syndrome Diagnosis
Tourette syndrome cannot be tested. Tests and scans such as MRI scans can be used to check for these conditions. If you’ve had tics for more than a year, you will be diagnosed with Tourette syndrome. A diagnosis will help you understand your condition better and also give you the opportunity to receive real support and treatment. A GP may refer you to a neurologist, a specialist in the nervous system and brain. To diagnose Tourette Syndrome and other disorders of tic, health professionals will examine the symptoms of an individual.
Consult your healthcare provider about symptoms and concerns that go beyond tics. Most children with TS are diagnosed with at least one other behavioral, mental or developmental condition. This can make managing their health care more difficult and stressful. The majority of children with TS have learning problems. It is important to coordinate care and receive the right treatment. The type of tic in motor or vocal disorders is different. Tourette syndrome (TS) is diagnosed if a person has both motor and vocal tics, and the symptoms have been present for at least one year. You can ask your doctor to perform brain imaging tests in order to rule out any other conditions that may be causing symptoms similar Tourette’s. The following must be included:
