You can use at-home care to help your child recover faster from tonsillitis. This is true whether the infection was bacterial or viral. If a virus is expected to be the cause of tonsillitis, these strategies are your only option. In viral cases, antibiotics are not recommended. The majority of children recover in seven to ten day.
Sleep – Get enough rest and sleep.
Adequate Fluids – Be sure to give your child enough water in order to prevent dehydration.
Comforting Foods and Beverages – Warm liquids can soothe a sore throat, such as warm honey water, broth or caffeine-free tea.
Saltwater Gargle –A salted water gargle will soothe a sore throat. Prepare a solution by adding 1/2 teaspoon table salt to 8 ounces of warm water (half a cup). Encourage your child’s mouth to be gargled and then the solution spitted out. For this, you can use medicated solutions such as Listerine.
Humidify air – Use a humidifier to remove dry air, which can aggravate a sore throat. Or sit with your child in a steamy bathroom for a few moments.
Offer lozengesLozenges are effective in relieving a sore throat for children older than 4 years.
Avoid irritations –Cigarette smoke and cleaning products that can irritate your throat should not be present in your home.
Aspirin should only be taken by children and teens if their doctor has prescribed it. Reye’s Syndrome is a rare, but potentially fatal condition linked to the use of aspirin by children with cold-like symptoms or flu.
