Common Causes of Thrombocytopenia
Low platelet counts can be caused by many different factors. The condition of thrombocytopenia is either inherited or acquired. This means that it can be passed from one generation to the next through genes or it can develop over time. Sometimes, the cause is unknown. Some of the major causes of thrombocytopenia are:
Bone Marrow Problem
The bone marrow is an assortment of tissues that are found inside the bones. Just like white and red blood cells, platelets are also produced in the bone marrow. Megakaryocytes are the bone marrow cell responsible for producing platelets. Megakaryocytes, which are precursors to platelets undergo a fragmentation process and release more than 1000 platelets. A problem or defect with the bone marrow may result in a decrease in platelet production. A decrease in platelet production is linked to thrombocytosis.
