Complications of Thrombocytopenia
If thrombocytopenia is not treated properly, complications can occur. The platelet count in the blood is usually low when these complications occur. If the platelet count drops below 10,000 then a serious situation can arise. Excessive internal and external bleeding can lead to other illnesses. It can lead to death if not treated. When the bleeding begins in the brain it can lead to a brain haemorrhage. The most extreme complications are.
Excessive bleeding
Excessive bleeding can lead to illness and is a major complication of thrombocytopenia. Internal bleeding does not occur very often unless the blood counts drop below 10,000. It is then very difficult to stop bleeding and the patient may experience abnormal bleeding. These complications are only seen in severe cases of thrombocytopenia. However, excessive blood loss can lead to other complications that can be extremely difficult to manage.
