Steroids
Platelet transfusions are not recommended if the antibodies that destroy the platelets are the cause of the thrombocytopenia. In this scenario, prednisolone or other steroids will likely be prescribed to the patient. The first dose of steroids can cause stomach irritation. A second drug is given to protect your stomach. Once the platelets have been controlled, you can reduce the dose.
