Splenectomy
The spleen is removed during this surgery. The spleen is a small organ located under the rib cage on the upper left side behind the stomach. When medicines fail, surgery is the best option. This is mostly for adults with immune thrombocytopenia. In immune thrombocytopenia the platelets that are coated with antibodies are removed by the spleen. When the spleen has been removed, the platelets will still be in the bloodstream. As the spleen produces antibodies, removing it reduces the number of platelet antibody along with the removal antibody-coated plates. It is usually performed when non-surgical treatment fails to reduce the disorder.
