Blood or platelet Transfusions
Blood transfusion is used to stop bleeding in patients with thrombocytopenia. Transfusions can involve two main types of platelet products. The first is made from whole blood platelets, which are derived by testing and irradiating four to five donations of whole blood. Most commonly, apheresis is used to obtain platelets from the donor. This procedure involves inserting a needle into the intravenous line of the blood vessel and receiving healthy platelets through it. Patients with thrombocytopenia often undergo blood transfusions.
