Thrombocytopenia Treatments
Depending on the severity and type of the disease, thrombocytopenia may last for a few days or even a few years. Mild thrombocytopenia patients may not need any treatment. The person with heparin induced t-thrombocytopenia may be prescribed blood-thinning medications. Some common treatments include
Medicines
The platelet count is increased if thrombocytopenia causes the immune disorder. The treatment is usually corticosteroids, which slow down platelet destruction. These medications can be taken by mouth or injected directly into the vein.
If they do not have much of an effect, stronger medications are used to suppress your immune system. Doctors can prescribe immunoglobulin, rituximab or other drugs that block the immune system. These are injected directly into the vein. These steroids are not the same as those that athletes use to improve performance.
