Prolonged bleeding is a symptom of severe thrombocytopenia. The bleeding is not caused by thrombocytopenia until it becomes very severe. When the platelet count is dangerously low, internal and external bleeding will occur and not stop. A low platelet count means that they can’t stop the bleeding and the result is prolonged bleeding.
