Surgery
Thrombocytopenia can be caused by surgery. Low platelet counts can be caused by heart bypass surgery or radiation treatments to the bones. Platelets are destroyed by machine blood vessels or heart valves. Platelet counts are reduced by the machine used in blood transfusions and bypass surgery.
