Peggy felt uneasy watching her husband pack up his things. Peggy knew she could not hold him back and had to let go. Both were aware of dangers but said goodbye in the hope that they would both be safe. Billie took his vow to serve his country seriously.
No retreat
As World War II reached its peak and progressed, an increasing number men were called to military service. Billie was not only gifted for military service, but also stood out from other soldiers. They had not approached him despite the fact that they were a top prospect. Billie knew that eventually the day would come. Billie had been in pilot training and expressed his desire to serve the country in any way. His enlistment was therefore a rite-of-passage for him.
