Anarchy
Peggy tried to learn as much about the situation as possible during this turbulent time. Peggy couldn’t understand why he had not written to her in such a long period of time. It was through letters that the two had first gotten to be acquainted and courted each other. There was no reason for him to stop interacting with her at this point. Everything was disorganized and the military was anarchic. Peggy was informed by the Army’s Supreme Headquarters in France that her Husband would soon be returning to the United States. Peggy quickly realized that the story was incorrect and that she had to take action to reach him.
Unreliable Telegrams
It was a rollercoaster of emotions throughout the entire process, with no indication that it would be over soon. Peggy received a telegram on the 7th of July informing her that Billie was missing. Peggy cried, but stood up quickly and determined to discover the truth. Peggy was suspicious of the telegram and read it several times before she realized that there were some errors. Billie sent her handwritten letters that were dated shortly after the telegram. The letters confirmed that Billie was still alive. Peggy rushed to the telegraph, where she received a message informing her that the date on the telegram was incorrect and that Billie was missing since July 17th. She had a feeling that something was amiss.
