Soft tissue disorders
posterior hip discomfort
Multiple conditions may affect the outer aspect of the hip joint. The diagnosis will depend on the size of the affected area.
Bursitis of the trochanteric bursa
Bursae are small fluid-filled pouches that function as a cushion to reduce friction between two moving body parts. For example, where ligaments and tendons cross bones. If you are experiencing pain over the bony portion of your hip joint, you may be suffering from trochanteric bursitis. This condition is caused by inflammation of the bursa at the front of the thighbone. As a general response to an injury or infection, inflammation causes the bursa to become hot, swollen, and excruciating.
It is the most prevalent condition, but its causes are typically unknown. You may only experience pain over a bony area, but it may radiate down your leg or appear to originate from the hip joint itself. Trochanteric bursitis can occasionally affect both hips. It responds well to analgesics, rest, and physical therapy. (3)
