In the case of females with genital herpes, patients may report more frequent urination pain and an abnormal vaginal discharge. The vagina can develop blisters that can take up to three weeks or a month to recover completely. Additionally, inflammation of the cervix can be a symptom of female genital herpes. If you are exposed to the herpes simplex virus at a later stage in your pregnancy, it is imperative that you consult a physician or midwife, as this can lead to complications. In addition to being transmitted through anal and vaginal contact, genital herpes can also spread to the lips, mouth, tongue, and other areas of the body.
However, the incubation period for the virus that causes genital herpes varies, and some people do not experience their first herpes outbreak until months or even years after contracting the infection. When genital herpes occurs, the initial outbreak may last for many weeks. Once genital herpes symptoms begin to subside, the virus reverts to a dormant state until a new outbreak is triggered, which reactivates the virus. Recurrent outbreaks of genital herpes symptoms are typically shorter and milder. Patients typically learn to recognize the initial symptoms of a genital herpes outbreak, allowing them to promptly begin antiviral treatment.
The majority of those infected with HSV are unaware of their condition because they experience no symptoms or because their symptoms are so benign at that point. After exposure to HSV, symptoms may appear anywhere between two and twelve days later. Until the infection begins to clear, you may experience tenderness as well as discomfort in the genital region. Some individuals may only experience a single outbreak of genital herpes, while others may experience multiple outbreaks per year. The symptoms and frequency of outbreaks depend on the type of herpes virus exposure on average. [3]
