Lightheadedness or Dizziness
Patients with pulmonary embolism may experience dizziness or lightheadedness because blood clots can make it difficult for blood to move easily through the lungs. Dizziness is a common symptom, but it can also be caused by a variety of situations. Some of these can be temporary or not serious. Lightheadedness can also be caused by a lower level of oxygen in the blood. This creates hypoxemia, or low levels of oxygen to the brain. Some patients have difficulty diagnosing pulmonary embolism because they forget about their symptoms such as dizziness or lightheadedness. Blood clots lodged in the lungs can cause clogging of arteries, increasing dizziness.
