Rapid or irregular heartbeat
The right side of the body is more active when there is a pulmonary embolism, which causes the heartbeat to become more irregular. Patients with acute embolism are more likely to experience arrhythmia, or irregular heartbeats. This is a severe symptom of pulmonary embolism which can lead to cardiac arrest in patients who do not take anticoagulant medication. Blood clots that travel from deep veins to the lungs can cause atrial fibrillation. A pulmonary embolism, however, can lead to more sudden changes in heartbeats in patients who already have a heart condition.
