Pulmonary infarction

The death of lung tissues is one of the worst complications that can occur from pulmonary embolism. When oxygenated blood is blocked from reaching lung tissue and providing nourishment, pulmonary infarction occurs. Infarction of the lungs is usually caused by a large clot. Blood clots that are smaller may dissolve and break on their own. The symptoms of pulmonary infarction are slow to appear. There are no nerve endings within the tissues of the lungs, so symptoms do not appear when tissue dies deeper in the tissues. When symptoms do occur, they can include fever, sharp chest pain and bloody cough.
