Pleural Effusion

Pleural effusion is “water on your lungs”. It occurs when fluid builds up between the thin membranes surrounding the lungs, i.e. the pleura. Pulmonary embolism, after open-heart surgery side effects, cirrhosis and heart failure, is the fourth most common cause of pleural fluid. Pleural effusion can cause chest pain, dry cough and shortness breath. The treatment of pulmonary embolism may help to resolve the condition of an underlying pleural effusion. In severe cases of pleural fluid, doctors will perform a procedure that drains the excess fluid to help with normal breathing.
