Pulmonary Angiography by Catheter
Catheter-based lung angiography provides the most accurate diagnosis of pulmonary embolism. Doctors choose catheter-based lung angiography if other tests give unclear results. A surgeon inserts a long, thin tube into a large vein of the patient’s groin. The catheter is then inserted into the arteries in the lung. A dye is injected through the catheter by the surgeon, and the images of blood vessel inside the lung are visible on an X ray. CTPA has made catheter-based lung angiography a rare procedure.
