Some medical treatments, such as medications or surgery for medical conditions, can also cause blood clots. Cancer patients may also experience abnormal blood clots that travel to the lungs, resulting in pulmonary embolism. Patients with a past history of stroke or heart attack are also more likely to develop pulmonary embolisms.
