Pain following activity or exercise
After prolonged physical activity, the pain in the heel may flare up. The pain is not worsened by physical activity or exercise, but rather afterward. This is because the plantar fascia ligaments start to tear and become inflamed, causing pain that radiates outwards. Increased inflammation and irritation in the plantar fascia is responsible for the flare-up of pain following exercise or strenuous activity. Plantar fasciitis is characterized by pain that occurs after stopping a physical exercise or activity.
