Biphasic mesothelioma
Biphasic mesothelioma is characterized by the presence of both epithelial and sarcomatoid cells in the tumor cells. The prognosis life expectancy for this form of mesothelioma depends on the predominant cell type in the tumor. If epithelial cells predominate in the tumor, the prognosis is likely to be favorable. In contrast, if the tumor contains a greater number of sarcomatoid cells, the prognosis is worse and the treatment is more difficult. Nearly 30 percent of pleural mesothelioma tumors and 25 percent of peritoneal mesothelioma tumors contain biphasic cells.
