Types of mesothelioma by the type of cells
There are nearly three categories of mesothelioma cell types, including epithelial cells, sarcomatoid cells, and biphasic cells. The physicians who treat mesothelioma can distinguish between the three types of cells based on their microscopic appearance. Different types of mesothelioma tumor cells react differently to various treatment strategies. The sarcomatoid cells are extremely resistant to the treatment, whereas the epithelial cells respond splendidly.
Mesothelioma with epithelial cells
Epithelial cell mesothelioma or epithelioid mesothelioma accounts for approximately 70% to 75% of asbestos-related mesothelioma cases. This form of cancer cells does not spread as quickly as sarcomatoid and biphasic mesothelioma tumor cells, and its prognosis is also superior to the rest. Additionally, epithelial cell mesothelioma requires less aggressive treatment options and is much simpler to cure. Nearly fifty percent of pleural mesothelioma cases contain epithelial cells, while approximately seventy-five percent of peritoneal tumors contain epithelial tumor cells.
